Until now, the Bruton Players have performed in the difficult setting of the
town’s Unionist Hall, but director Christine Dunn and her company decided
that 2005 was the time for a move. And what a move!
They chose Laurence Boswell’s version of the fairytale thriller “Beauty
and the Beast” for last week’s production,
and with the Beast’s transformation came the emergence of one of the
best amateur companies in the region, fully fledged and astonishing.
Boswell created this beautifully written version of the familiar story, weaving
elements of several early versions
and throwing in a bit of 20th century Disney. The result, as performed in the
hall of Sexey’s School last week, was a triumph of acting, singing, movement,
physical theatre and direction.
It is not a panto, but has its pantomimic moments.
In this version wealthy merchant Jean Louis has three sons and three daughters.
The sons are by turns studious, sporty and inventive. The eldest two daughters
are the archetypal ugly sisters, selfish, scheming, lazy and cruel. Then
there is Beauty...
